How Can HLR Help Clean Databases To Boost Campaign Performance?
In this blog post we take a look at how HLR can help improve campaign targeting, boost responses, and save money for marketers and telemarketers.
What Is HLR?
Before we get into specifics, let’s take a look at what HLR is, and how it works. HLR stands for Home Location Register, it’s a group of databases (or a register) maintained by MNOs. Each MNO has their own database which they look after for their own subscribers, there is not one central database. These databases hold the most accurate, and up to date information on every single mobile phone number across the world. By using the CLX portal to perform an HLR ‘look-up’, access to all of these MNO databases is realized through one single point of entry.
What Information Can I Get From An HLR Look-up?
Performing a look up on the HLR provides very specific information on each mobile number:
Whether the phone number is valid / accurately formatted / if any digits are missing
If the phone is switched on
The number’s roaming status i.e. if the subscriber is on holiday abroad
The original network the number was subscribed to
If the number has been ported from another network
The current network (MNO) that the number belongs to
The Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network Code (MNC) associated with the number
It’s important to note that accurate HLR data cannot be retrieved for mobile numbers in Brazil, Canada and the USA. Regularly-updated Mobile Number Portability (MNP) databases are queried, instead of performing HLR Look-ups for these countries.
What Can HLR Do For Me?
How can this information be used to improve targeting and save money? Here’s 3 good reasons to get you started:
There’s not a lot of point in sending messages to invalid numbers. You’ll get charged for them even if they’re not delivered, and those charges could really rack up if you’re sending thousands of messages. Eliminating invalid numbers, or numbers that are not formatted correctly will streamline targeting and save money.
Accessing information on your subscribers current or previous network provider will enable accurate routing and billing of calls and messages. This ensures you get paid in full, and that your customers are being charged accurately too, which safeguards against lost revenue and unhappy customers with unexplained charges.
