CLX Sponsored Singapore Indoor Cricket Team Give it Their All in The Australasia Cup

When Rajiv Chandrasekar, Technical Support Manager at CLX Communications, approached us asking if we’d like to sponsor the Singapore Indoor Cricket Team at the Australasia Cup in Sri Lanka, we cast our minds back to last year around this time, and decided to jump at the opportunity to get involved again. We’re so proud to have such a superstar on board, why wouldn’t we support the team? Plus, Rajiv was named as vice-captain, so we needed to celebrate that for sure!

Held at the Austasia International Sports Complex in Thalawathugoda, Sri Lanka from the 20th to the 24th September 2018, this year’s competition brought together some of the world’s finest indoor cricket teams; Australia, India, Singapore and the host nation, Sri Lanka, to battle it out for the glory of winning the Australasia Cup.

We’ll be honest, Singapore were never heavily fancied, given the pedigree their opponents boasted in both the indoor and outdoor cricket arenas. But that didn’t mean they were going to go down without a fight!

The highlight of the tournament? Rajiv helped Singapore to a nail-biting victory over Sri Lanka in their own backyard! Gaining revenge for their 39-run defeat over the Sri Lankans on the opening day, this was a major upset for the hosts (sorry guys), but was a real boost for the Singapore team, it looked to be following the script when opening batsman Mustafa Hussain Khatawala lost his wicket for a golden duck. But, spurred on from the side-lines by their coach Rashid Khan, the Singapore team pulled off a win for the history books. The game ebbed and flowed, but once the fourth skin was over – and with it the match – the Singaporean players were rushing into the middle to celebrate their victory.

Batting at number four in the Singapore order, Dhanraj Ramamoorthy was the catalyst. He top scored in the match with 23 runs, with a staggering 230.00 strike rate that would make the likes of AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli and Shahid Afridi wonder what they’ve been doing wrong! He even took a pair of wickets, putting in a real all-round performance that Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff would be proud of. Sure, cricket is a team game, but he was the deserved recipient of the man-of-the-match award.

MVP Award

Aside from this, however, the matches followed the formbook. Singapore were hammered twice by Australia in the space of two days, and despite pushing India close in a 12-run defeat, Singapore finished bottom of the four-team group.

No surprises to find that Australia wiped the floor with the competition when it came down to it. After topping the group, they faced second-placed India in the final and made light work of their rivals, scoring 121 runs in the match, a tournament high, with Timothy Floros taking an impressive six-for with the ball!

Australia’s victory was no real surprise; their men’s team has won each edition of the Indoor Cricket World Cup since its inception in 1995 – a staggering 10 world titles – and were heavy favourites to take home the Australasia Cup before a ball was bowled. Their success was widespread once more, winning all the age groups in the Championship. Our congratulations go out to them as well-deserved winners though – we’ll get them next time, right guys?

Rajiv commented on this year’s performance:

once again the team were super proud to bear the CLX name on our shirts, we gave it everything, and the win against Sri Lanka was a real high point for us. We look forward to doing it all again for the Masters World Series in 2019.

As far as everyone at CLX is concerned, the Singapore team can walk away with their heads held high! They performed valiantly in all six of their games, especially given some impressive batting performances against some of the best bowlers the indoor game has to offer. We’re proud to be a part of their journey!
